At Wild Oak Woods Eco-campsite we really do mean the site is environmentally friendly and low carbon footprint.

The site is Off Grid. 240v electric is supplied to the facilities block, manager’s accommodation and water systems by just over 4kw of solar panels with a battery store, backed up by diesel generators. Water comes from a borehole on site, is filtered and passes through an ultraviolet sterilizing light before arriving at the facilities block. Grey water passes in to a septic tank which acts as a grease trap and is cleaned up by a reed bed system before being returned to the environment. Hot water is provided to the facilities block by a solar thermal system backed up by a wood burner boiler stove. All our toilets are composting and waste is a great source of nutrients for the trees. Firewood is generated as a by-product of the management of the nature reserve and air dried on site. Light in the camping cabins is supplied by a solar panel and battery system.

The site build was carried out by local contractors using local materials where possible and many of the elements of the build are re-use items such as the windows and doors in the cabins and most of the furniture. 

At present the site runs on around 400l diesel, 10l petrol, 10l oil and 70kg of gas a year. Carbon is captured by growing trees and building soil giving the site a very low carbon footprint. Revenue from the campsite allows staff to work with students and volunteers and contractors to manage the nature reserve for wildlife and increase biodiversity.
